Some pool-deck systems need a sealer or topcoat; some are designed to function as the exposed coating themselves. Adding “a sealer” just because concrete is outdoors can change gloss, traction, permeability, color, and maintenance—so the right answer comes from the complete system specification.

Do not automatically seal every pool deck. If your overlay/coating manufacturer specifies a topcoat, use a compatible one. If the finished product is already a deck coating or sealer, adding another film can be unnecessary or harmful.

Examples of different approaches
Florida Paints DuraDek is a cementitious overlay that requires an appropriate topcoat for the intended traffic. ICT Color Seal is a pigmented acrylic sealer designed for use over its Texture-Krete surfacing system and other concrete surfaces. Florida Paints also sells a separate Color & Seal acrylic concrete sealer. These are system components, not generic interchangeable “clear coats.”
Why too much film can become a problem
Repeated layers of film-forming sealer or paint can eventually build a thick coating stack. If lower layers lose adhesion or moisture becomes trapped, the visible symptom may be whitening, blistering, or peeling. Future maintenance should therefore consider what is already on the deck rather than automatically adding another coat.
Traction can change after sealing
A clear film can make a textured deck feel smoother. Products such as CoverTec CoverGrip exist specifically to add traction to sealers and coatings. If your pool area is walked barefoot, ask to evaluate the complete cured finish with the traction additive—not the unsealed overlay sample.
