Pool deck paint changes the surface mainly by adding a coating film. Resurfacing usually means creating a more substantial new wearing surface over the existing concrete. The terms overlap in contractor advertising, so the practical question is: what layers are actually being installed?

What “paint” can legitimately mean
Florida Paints TropiCrete Premium is a 100% acrylic deck coating. Richard’s FlexDeck is also acrylic but much higher-build and marketed as a deck resurfacer. ICT Texture-EEZ is acrylic yet contains quartz and is specifically a texture coating. These examples show why thickness and product design matter more than the generic word “paint.”
What a cementitious overlay adds
Products such as ICT Deck Mix, Florida Paints DuraDek, and SureCrete SureTex combine cementitious material with polymer modification to create a new decorative concrete surface. They can be applied in textured or patterned finishes and then coated/sealed as the system requires.
When paint can be the rational choice
- The existing surface is sound and compatible.
- You primarily want color renewal and modest texture change.
- The deck does not need extensive leveling or surface reconstruction.
- You accept that future maintenance may involve recoating the film.
When resurfacing deserves a closer look
- The deck is worn, patched, or visually inconsistent.
- You want a new knockdown, stencil, scored, or decorative finish.
- The old coating needs substantial removal anyway.
- You want the characteristics of a specific overlay system rather than another thin film.
Neither option fixes a bad slab by magic
Paint and overlays both depend on the concrete beneath them. Ongoing movement, major displacement, hollow concrete, poor drainage, and moisture problems need diagnosis before the decorative decision.
