Before coating, resurfacing or replacing a cracked or uneven slab, determine whether the visible surface is the problem—or whether the slab has lost support underneath. Surface Blueprint covers settlement only where it changes the repair decision: driveways, pool decks, patios, garage slabs and other concrete surfaces homeowners may otherwise try to coat or resurface.
Three Very Different Jobs Can Look Similar at First

The Surface Blueprint Boundary
This section is not a substitute for structural engineering or geotechnical diagnosis. Its purpose is to help homeowners recognize when a surface project has crossed into a support, settlement or structural question. The American Concrete Institute emphasizes that successful crack repair starts with determining the cause and whether cracking is active or dormant. If cracking is caused by continuing foundation settlement, repairing only the crack does not correct the settlement.
Florida Adds a Subsidence Complication
Florida settlement is not automatically a sinkhole. The Florida Geological Survey lists several conditions that can mimic sinkhole activity, including improperly compacted fill, buried organic material, broken drains or septic components, and other subsurface conditions. A driveway panel or pool-deck section that settles should therefore be investigated as a support problem without jumping immediately to one geological diagnosis.
