A safer wet pool deck is not simply the roughest surface you can create. Pool-deck traction has to be balanced against barefoot comfort, cleanability, appearance, and the coating/sealer system. The good news is that traction can be designed several different ways.
Quick answer
Wet traction can come from the overlay texture itself, quartz or aggregate built into the coating, polymer traction additive mixed into a sealer/topcoat, broadcast aggregate, or a combination. Around bare feet, particle shape and texture size matter as much as “more grit.”
Texture built into the coating
ICT Texture-EEZ 3500 is factory blended with quartz and specifically marketed as a slip-resistant texture coating for pool decks and similar surfaces. Cementitious knockdown overlays can also create traction through their physical profile before any sealer additive is considered.
Traction additive in the final coat
CoverTec’s CoverGrip is a Florida-made example of a polymer additive mixed into clear sealers, stains, or coatings. Its technical sheet specifically emphasizes the small particle size and rounded shape as a way to increase traction while remaining more comfortable to bare feet than sharper mineral grit.
Why a glossy sealer can change the feel
A textured overlay can become noticeably different after a film-forming sealer or topcoat is applied. The final finish may partly fill the texture or create a smoother film over high spots. That is why the traction question should be answered for the complete system, not for the raw overlay alone.
Cleaning can be the real problem
Mildew, algae, sunscreen, body oils, pollen, and dirt can make an otherwise well-textured deck slippery. Before resurfacing a sound deck solely for traction, determine whether the problem is the finish itself or contamination on top of it.
More texture is not free
- Aggressive grit can be uncomfortable on bare feet and knees.
- Deep texture can trap dirt and make cleaning harder.
- High-profile surfaces may wear unevenly at traffic paths.
- Some traction additives require specific cleaning methods so they are not prematurely abraded away.
Questions to ask a contractor
- Where does the traction come from in this system?
- Can I feel an actual cured sample with the final sealer/topcoat?
- Can the traction level be adjusted?
- What happens to traction when the deck is recoated later?
- How should the surface be cleaned without prematurely wearing the aggregate?
