There is no single product category called “pool cage paint” that makes preparation irrelevant. Professional options can include one-component waterborne direct-to-metal acrylics, primer-plus-topcoat systems, and higher-performance two-component finishes. The useful question is whether the exact system is approved for the prepared aluminum and existing coating condition you actually have.
What DTM Really Means
Direct-to-metal means a product is formulated to perform directly over certain properly prepared metal substrates under its published conditions. It does not mean “spray directly over dirt, chalk, corrosion or any unknown old finish.” Sherwin-Williams Pro Industrial DTM Acrylic and PPG PITT-TECH Plus EP DTM Acrylic are current examples of one-component waterborne acrylic DTM products; their data still assumes proper surface preparation.
When a Separate Primer May Enter the System
Bare aluminum spots, corrosion treatment, a questionable old finish or a selected high-performance topcoat may call for a dedicated primer or tie coat. The correct answer depends on the coating manufacturer’s written system—not a universal rule that every cage must or must not be primed.
Why Two Contractors Can Specify Different Chemistry
A waterborne acrylic system may be attractive for ease of use, fast dry and exterior weathering. A contractor may instead specify a two-component polyurethane or another industrial finish for particular durability, gloss or chemical-resistance goals. The homeowner should compare the published substrate, preparation, film thickness, recoat window, environmental limits and warranty—not just whether one proposal says “industrial.”
What the Quote Should Identify
- Manufacturer and exact product number/name for every coat.
- Whether the old finish is being retained, abraded, spot-stripped or fully removed.
- How bare aluminum and corroded areas are treated.
- Primer/tie-coat requirements.
- Number of coats and target application/film thickness.
- Allowed temperature, humidity, dew/condensation and rain exposure during application.
- Screen masking/removal and protection of pool/deck/house.
- Warranty exclusions for old coating failure, corrosion or structural movement.
Avoid One-Line Product Claims
“We use Sherwin-Williams,” “we use DTM,” or “we use aerospace paint” is not enough information. A major manufacturer can sell dozens of unrelated coatings. Ask for the exact technical data sheet and compare it with the substrate and preparation actually written into the proposal.
