White or gray powder on an older pool cage is a warning that the surface is not ready for paint. It may include chalk from a weathered organic coating, aluminum corrosion products where the finish has broken down, or both. Whatever the exact mix, new coating should not be asked to bond to loose powder.
Chalking and Aluminum Oxidation Are Related but Not Identical
Chalking is the powdery residue left as an old coating binder weathers under UV and exposure. Aluminum oxidation/corrosion describes changes to the metal itself when protective finish is absent or compromised. Homeowners often call both conditions “oxidation,” but the preparation method needs to address what is actually present.
The Hand-Wipe Test Is Only a Screening Test
If rubbing the frame leaves powder on your hand, the finish is clearly not a clean, sound bonding surface. That tells you preparation is needed; it does not tell you whether the entire enclosure needs stripping to bare aluminum.
What Proper Preparation Is Trying to Accomplish
- Remove dirt, salts, mildew and pool/irrigation contamination.
- Remove loose chalk and weak coating.
- Feather or remove peeling edges.
- Prepare exposed aluminum as required by the selected coating system.
- Create enough surface profile for the specified primer/topcoat to bond.
- Confirm that remaining old coating is strongly adhered before burying it under new material.
Why “Pressure Wash and Paint” Can Be Too Vague
Water cleaning can remove substantial contamination, but it does not automatically prove that tightly adhered chalk, glossy factory finish, failing edges or bare-aluminum spots have been prepared to the coating manufacturer’s requirements. Ask what mechanical abrasion, spot preparation and adhesion verification are included.
Do Not Confuse Rust Streaks with Aluminum Rusting
Aluminum does not form the familiar red-brown iron rust seen on carbon-steel screws. Rust streaks on an aluminum cage often originate at fasteners or other ferrous components. That can be a hardware problem as well as a cosmetic staining problem.
