Yes, a sound factory-finished or powder-coated aluminum enclosure can often be field-repainted. But the new liquid coating is bonding to an aged existing finish—not magically replacing it. The old finish must be clean, sound and prepared for the exact repaint system.
The Existing Finish Becomes Part of the New System
If the factory coating is tightly bonded, a repaint system may intentionally remain over it after cleaning and abrasion. If the old finish is peeling, chalking badly or separating from aluminum, putting a stronger new coating over the top does not repair the weak layer underneath.
Preparation Usually Has More Than One Condition
- Sound old finish: clean, decontaminate and abrade as required for adhesion.
- Loose old finish: remove it and feather sound edges.
- Bare aluminum: prepare/prime according to the selected system rather than assuming the same treatment as old paint.
- Corroded fasteners or damaged connections: address hardware/structure before burying it in new paint.
A Test Patch Is Valuable
When the identity or condition of the old coating is uncertain, a small prepared test area can reveal adhesion or compatibility problems before an entire enclosure is sprayed. The coating manufacturer or technical representative can also help specify a repaint system for weathered architectural aluminum.
Field Repainting Is Not Re-Powder-Coating the Cage
Powder coatings are applied as dry powder and cured with heat. An assembled screen enclosure attached to a house is normally repainted with a liquid field-applied coating. The original factory powder finish can remain underneath if it is suitable, but the new work is still a field repaint.
