How to Read a Paint Technical Data Sheet: Solids, Film Thickness, Coverage and Dry Time

A paint label tells you what the product is called. The technical data sheet tells you how the manufacturer expects it to work. For exterior coatings, the most useful fields are substrate approval, preparation, volume solids, wet and dry film thickness, coverage, dry/recoat time, weather limits and product limitations.

1. Recommended Substrates

Start here. “Exterior paint” does not automatically mean suitable for every exterior surface. Check whether the sheet actually names stucco, CMU, poured concrete, fiber cement, wood, metal, previously painted surfaces or whatever you have.

2. Volume Solids

Volume solids estimate how much of the wet coating remains as dry film after water/solvent leaves. Higher is not automatically “better,” because different product types are designed for different film builds, but the number helps explain how wet thickness turns into dry thickness.

3. Wet Film and Dry Film Thickness

These values are often expressed in mils, where one mil is one-thousandth of an inch. Manufacturers design coatings to perform within a target film range. Applying too thin can leave inadequate film; applying too thick can create drying, curing or appearance problems. A stated “two coats” should not be separated from the specified film build and coverage.

4. Coverage

Coverage is usually a range rather than a promise. Porous masonry, texture, application method and required film build can lower actual square footage per gallon. If a contractor’s material quantity only works by assuming the maximum published coverage on rough stucco, ask how the required film thickness will be achieved.

5. Dry-to-Touch vs. Recoat vs. Cure

These are different clocks. A surface can feel dry while still being too early to recoat, wash, expose to rain or put into full service. Product sheets often note that humidity, temperature, film build and airflow change drying time—especially relevant in Florida.

6. Limitations and Surface Preparation

This is where many failures are predicted in advance. Look for restrictions involving standing water, below-grade use, chalk, efflorescence, high pH, old coatings, minimum temperature, dew point, moisture, primers and cure time.

PDS/TDS Is Not the Same as SDS

A Product Data Sheet or Technical Data Sheet focuses on performance and application. A Safety Data Sheet focuses on hazards, handling, ingredients and emergency information. Both matter, but an SDS is not a substitute for the application data sheet.
