How Long Before You Can Park on a New Garage Floor Coating?

“Dry,” “walkable,” “light traffic,” “vehicle traffic,” and “fully cured” are different milestones. Parking a car too early can mark, soften or damage a coating that already feels hard under your shoes. The correct wait time comes from the exact product system and the actual temperature/humidity during cure.

Why One Number Is Misleading

Rust-Oleum’s two-part EpoxyShield technical data, for example, lists foot traffic at about 24 hours, vehicle traffic at 72 hours and full cure at seven days under its stated test conditions. Sika’s fast-cure Sikafloor 515 publishes roughly four hours to foot traffic, eight hours to light traffic and five days to full cure at 68°F. Those examples show why “epoxy takes days and polyaspartic takes hours” is only a rough marketing shorthand.

Temperature Changes More Than the Calendar

Warm material and warm concrete can shorten pot life and accelerate cure. Sika publishes a Sikafloor 515 pot life of roughly 20 minutes at 50°F, 15 minutes at 68°F and 10 minutes at 86°F, and notes humidity also affects working/cure time. In a Florida garage, the installer may therefore have less working time even though the floor can return to service sooner.

Separate These Milestones in the Proposal

  • Recoat window: when the next layer must be applied without additional abrasion.
  • Foot traffic: when careful walking is allowed.
  • Light traffic: carts or limited use, depending on the manufacturer.
  • Vehicle traffic: when the manufacturer allows cars/tires.
  • Full cure: when ultimate chemical/mechanical properties are expected.

If a contractor promises “back in the garage tomorrow,” ask whether that means walking on it, moving storage back, or parking a hot vehicle. Those are not interchangeable promises.
