Pool-deck pavers can be sealed, but “wet look” and “pool-deck safe” are not synonyms. A sealer can change texture and wet traction even when it improves color and stain resistance. Around a Florida pool, the finish should be chosen by wet-use performance first and appearance second.

Do not select a paver pool-deck sealer from gloss level alone. Confirm that the exact product is intended for pool surrounds or wet walking surfaces, understand whether it forms a film, and determine how the finished system will maintain traction when wet.
Why Product Labels Matter
Behr’s current Low-Lustre Sealer is marketed for concrete, pavers and masonry but specifically says it is not recommended for areas immediately adjacent to pools and warns that sealed surfaces may become slippery when wet. That does not mean all acrylic sealers are unsuitable around pools; it means use restrictions are product-specific and must be read.
By contrast, other manufacturers sell coatings or sealers specifically intended for pool decks and may publish slip-resistant textures or optional traction additives.
Gloss Can Change the Walking Surface
A film-forming sealer fills some of the microscopic texture that contributes to traction. A high-gloss surface may therefore feel very different after rain or splash-out. Adding aggregate or a traction additive can help, but the particle size, loading, distribution, film thickness, and wear all matter.
Do not assume that an invisible additive automatically restores the original paver’s wet traction.
Penetrating Treatments Can Preserve More Texture
Silane/siloxane treatments penetrate into the cementitious surface rather than building the same type of visible film. CMHA notes that these treatments generally leave a flat, no-gloss finish while providing water repellency. That can be useful where a natural look and retention of the original surface texture are priorities.
But penetrating products may not provide the same color enhancement, joint-sand stabilization, or stain resistance as a film-forming urethane or acrylic. Again, the choice is a tradeoff.
Florida Code Check
The 2023 Florida Building Code’s public-pool provisions require public pool wet decks to have a smooth, slip-resistant finish and to be designed for that use. Those provisions are written for public pools; they should not be misquoted as a universal private-home pool-deck coating rule.
For a residential pool deck, however, the practical issue is the same: people will walk barefoot on a wet surface. A finish that becomes dangerously slick is a bad outcome regardless of which code section applies.
Drainage and Texture Work Together
Standing water increases exposure time and slip risk. A sealer cannot correct a settled paver field, clogged drain, or improper slope. If a pool deck holds puddles after rain or splash-out, address drainage before treating gloss as the primary design problem.
Questions to Put in the Quote
- What exact sealer and finish are proposed?
- Does the technical data specifically permit pool surrounds or wet walking surfaces?
- Is the sealer penetrating or film-forming?
- Will a traction additive be used? Which one and at what application rate?
- How will the contractor prevent uneven grit distribution?
- What is the return-to-service time before foot traffic and pool splash?
- How will the finish be maintained or recoated as it wears?
