Acid Wash vs. Pool Resurfacing: When Cleaning Becomes Surface Removal

An acid wash and a resurfacing solve different problems. Acid treatment chemically attacks the existing cementitious surface in an effort to remove or alter deposits and staining. Resurfacing installs a new interior finish. If the old finish is already etched, thin, rough, delaminated or chemically deteriorated, making it “cleaner” may not make it sound again.

Why the Same Symptom Can Lead to Opposite Advice

A white rough surface caused by mineral scale may have material deposited on top of the finish. A rough surface caused by aggressive water may have cement compounds dissolved out of the finish. Acid can dissolve calcium-containing material, so treating both conditions identically is not a safe assumption.

An Acid Wash Is Not a Neutral Cleaning Step

Muriatic acid is hydrochloric acid. NPC identifies it as a material used for pool acid washing, and NPC technical materials also discuss chemical etching as a deterioration mechanism for cementitious finishes. The homeowner question should therefore be “what are we intentionally removing, and how much viable finish will remain?” rather than simply “will acid make it brighter?”

When Resurfacing Becomes the More Logical Conversation

  • Surface is broadly rough, pitted or uncomfortable rather than locally stained.
  • Hollow/delaminated areas are present.
  • Finish is visibly eroded or aggregate/cement loss is widespread.
  • Prior acid treatments produced only temporary cosmetic improvement.
  • The desired change includes a different finish system, texture or color.

Why “Try Acid First” Can Be Expensive

If the real problem is finish deterioration, a drain-and-acid-wash can add cost and exposure without avoiding a later replaster. Recent homeowner discussions repeatedly show this exact frustration: a stain or blotchy finish is acid-washed, the appearance changes, and the underlying problem either remains or becomes more obvious.

Ask for the Diagnosis in Writing

  • What do you believe the discoloration or roughness actually is?
  • What test supports that diagnosis?
  • What does the acid treatment remove?
  • What appearance or surface risk should I expect afterward?
  • If it does not solve the problem, what is the next repair?
