“Stain” describes what a pool owner sees, not what caused it. Iron, copper or manganese can deposit color. Organic material can discolor a surface. Calcium/mineral scale can mask the finish. Aggressive chemistry can remove pigment or cement itself. Treatment should follow diagnosis because the wrong chemistry can alter the finish without removing the actual cause.
Color Gives Clues, Not Proof
NPC notes that copper and manganese can produce blue, green or black staining and iron can produce red, orange or black staining. But color overlap means appearance alone is not definitive. A black area is not automatically “organic,” and a white area is not automatically harmless calcium scale.
Start With Four Questions
- Is anything deposited on the surface? Scale may feel raised or crusty.
- Did the finish itself change? Etching/pigment loss can feel porous or rough without a removable deposit.
- Where could metals come from? Fill water, algaecides, corrosion or heater components can be relevant.
- What changed before the stain appeared? Chemical addition, fill-water change, debris, heater issue, acid treatment or startup event.
Test Before Treating the Whole Pool
Stain-identification tests and localized professional spot testing can help narrow the cause. The goal is to learn whether the discoloration responds to a metal-specific, organic or scale-oriented treatment before subjecting the entire finish to aggressive chemistry.
If the Surface Is Worn, Stain Removal May Not Restore It
A chemically damaged or eroded finish can be discolored because material has been lost, not because something washable is sitting on it. NPC describes pigment loss from dissolution of cement compounds as irreversible once the finish itself has been leached. That is a resurfacing problem, not merely a stain-cleaning problem.
