Rusted screws on a pool cage are not merely a paint-prep nuisance. Fasteners and anchors are part of the enclosure’s load path. A repaint can hide stains and screw heads, but it does not restore metal that has lost section, a fastener that no longer grips, or an anchor that is pulling from concrete.
Florida Has Studied This Exact Problem
Research prepared for the Florida Building Commission specifically examined corrosion of roofing and screen-enclosure fastener systems. The Florida Hurricane Retrofit Guide also identifies rusted, backing-out or broken enclosure screws as a maintenance concern and discusses corrosion-resistant replacement hardware.
What to Inspect Before Painting
- Fasteners with heavy red rust, missing heads or obvious section loss.
- Screws backing out or connections that move.
- Rust staining emerging repeatedly from joints after cleaning.
- Corrosion/pitting of aluminum around the fastener hole.
- Base anchors and concrete attachment points.
- Door, brace and roof/wall connections that are loose or misaligned.
Stainless Steel Is Not a Magic Word
Fastener material, grade, coating, geometry, isolation from dissimilar materials and the original engineering all matter. Replacing structural fasteners should follow an appropriate enclosure-repair specification; simply buying whatever stainless screw fits the hole is not the same thing.
Coordinate Hardware and Coating
If fasteners are being replaced, doing that work before final coating generally avoids cutting through a new finish immediately afterward and lets the contractor prepare staining or damaged coating around the old hardware. The quote should state which hardware is replaced, which remains, and how new fasteners are protected/matched.
When to Escalate
If corrosion is widespread, anchors are loose, members are cracked/bent, or the enclosure moves at connections, stop treating it as a painting-only project. A qualified enclosure contractor or engineer may need to determine the appropriate repair.
