“Positive-side” waterproofing is installed on the side where water first contacts the assembly. “Negative-side” waterproofing is applied from the opposite side, after water has already entered or pressurized the substrate. Both approaches exist, but they place very different demands on the wall and coating.
Positive Side: Stop Water Before It Enters
Examples include exterior below-grade waterproofing on a foundation, properly detailed exterior wall membranes, roof membranes and exterior joint/flashing systems. The advantage is straightforward: less water is allowed into the wall or slab in the first place.
Negative Side: Resist Water From the Inside
Interior-applied masonry waterproofers are a common homeowner example. Some current products are specifically tested and sold for interior/below-grade use and hydrostatic pressure. That means negative-side application is not automatically invalid. But the masonry between the exterior water source and the interior coating may still become wet.
Why Source-Side Water Management Still Matters
Even when a negative-side coating is technically permitted, correcting grade, drainage, gutters, exterior cracks, failed penetrations or exterior waterproofing can reduce the amount of water the structure must absorb and the pressure the interior coating must resist. A coating does not regrade a yard or repair a broken drain.
Florida Above-Grade Walls Are Different Again
Florida homeowners often describe wind-driven rain through block or stucco as “waterproofing.” Above-grade walls usually need an assembly diagnosis: exterior finish, cracks, openings, flashings, sealant joints, roof interfaces and drainage plane. Applying a basement-style interior waterproofer can miss the actual entry path.
A Better Quote Question
Instead of asking “Do you waterproof from the inside or outside?” ask: Where is the water pressure coming from, what layer is supposed to stop it, and what happens to water that gets past that layer?
