Acid etching and grinding are both legitimate concrete-preparation methods, but they do different things. The right choice depends on what is on the concrete now and what the coating manufacturer requires afterward.
What Acid Etching Does
An etching solution reacts with exposed cementitious material and can roughen suitable bare concrete. Consumer coating manufacturers commonly specify etching to create a sandpaper-like texture before some paints, stains and sealers.
But acid needs access to the concrete. Oil, grease, paint, curing compounds and many sealers can block the reaction. Sherwin-Williams notes that lack of bubbling during an acid-preparation procedure can indicate contamination or a concrete treatment interfering with the etch.
What Grinding Does
Diamond grinding mechanically abrades the surface. Depending on the equipment and passes used, it can remove weak cement paste, smooth defects, open pores and remove some existing coatings or contaminants. It also produces dust that must be controlled and thoroughly removed before coating.
Why “Grinding Is Always Better” Is Too Simple
ICRI’s surface-preparation framework does not declare one universal winner. It matches the method and resulting Concrete Surface Profile to the protective system and substrate condition. Sherwin-Williams’ current flooring guide, for example, lists acid etching, grinding and light shot blasting as typical ways to achieve CSP 1–3 for certain 4–15 mil coating and sealing applications.
When Mechanical Preparation Has a Clear Advantage
- Old coating or sealer must be physically removed.
- The concrete has weak laitance or unsound surface material.
- The required coating system specifies a mechanical profile.
- Etching cannot reach the mineral surface because contamination or treatment is present.
When Etching May Be Appropriate
- The concrete is genuinely bare, sound and free of oil/sealer.
- The exact consumer coating system permits chemical etching.
- The desired profile can be achieved and all etch residue can be thoroughly rinsed/neutralized as the product requires.
