“Kool Deck” and “cool deck” should not be treated as interchangeable terms. Kool Deck® is a Mortex trademark for a specific cementitious concrete topping first introduced in 1962. “Cool deck” is often used informally for many different light-colored, textured, reflective, or heat-conscious pool-deck surfaces.

If a proposal says Kool Deck®, ask whether it is actually a Mortex product. If the contractor means a generic “cool deck” finish, ask for the manufacturer and exact product name. The performance and installation requirements may be completely different.
What genuine Kool Deck® is
Mortex describes Keystone Kool Deck® and Kool Deck® Elite as cementitious concrete toppings intended for areas such as swimming pool decks, patios, courtyards, and walkways. Mortex states that Kool Deck® significantly lowers concrete surface temperature under comparable conditions and provides a textured nonskid surface. The company also identifies Kool Deck, Keystone Kool Deck, and related names as Mortex trademarks or registered trademarks.
Why the generic wording became confusing
Florida has decades of textured pool decks, and homeowners commonly describe many light-colored or spray-textured finishes as “cool deck.” But modern options include acrylic coatings, polymer-modified cementitious overlays, reflective-pigment systems, spray textures, and proprietary resurfacing products from many manufacturers.
A cooler surface is not one technology
Surface temperature can be influenced by color, solar reflectance, pigment technology, texture, thermal properties, sun exposure, moisture, and the underlying material. ICT, for example, markets H₂Cool products using infrared-reflective pigments. Mortex uses its own cementitious Kool Deck formulation. A light-colored conventional coating may rely mostly on color and reflectance. Those are not the same mechanism.
What Surface Blueprint means by these words
- Kool Deck®: the actual Mortex-branded product/system.
- Cooler pool-deck surface: a generic description of a surface chosen partly for reduced heat gain or barefoot comfort.
- Knockdown texture: an application/texture style, not automatically Kool Deck®.
- Spray deck: another generic/market term that needs a manufacturer and product name to be meaningful.
