As of August 2026, the statewide code in effect is the Florida Building Code, 8th Edition (2023), effective December 31, 2023. The 9th Edition (2026) is in the update process; the Florida Building Commission’s June 2026 workplan lists December 31, 2026 as the effective date. Do not assume a code is in force merely because its edition year has arrived.
Why the Edition Matters to a Homeowner
Product approvals, evaluation reports, permit documents and installation instructions may identify a particular Florida Building Code edition. A product record approved under one code version should not be treated as proof that every configuration is automatically acceptable under another. The Florida Product Approval search system currently instructs users to select the 2023 code version for the code now in effect.
What Happens When the 2026 Code Takes Effect?
Florida updates the code on a three-year cycle. The Commission’s June 2026 workplan lists December 31, 2026 as the effective date for the 9th Edition. Until that transition occurs, the 8th Edition remains the operative statewide edition.
A Practical Verification Sequence
- Check the Florida Building Commission homepage for the edition currently in effect.
- For an FL product number, search using the applicable code version.
- For permitted work, ask the local building department which code governs the permit and whether transition provisions apply.
- Do not rely on an old screenshot, brochure or contractor proposal as the final authority on code edition.
