Why Grouting Every Joint Can Be a Mistake
TCNA explains that movement joints are needed because the tile and substrate can expand and contract differently. At changes in substrate or backing surface—such as many wall-to-floor transitions—a flexible sealant is generally used instead of rigid grout so the surfaces can move independently.

Caulk Is Maintenance, Not a Defect
Flexible sealant may age differently than grout and may require maintenance sooner, but substituting rigid grout because it looks more uniform can create cracking or stress problems. The joint should be designed for movement first and appearance second.
Do Not Copy a Generic Spacing Number
TCNA’s EJ171 guidance considers room size, sunlight, moisture, exterior exposure and other site conditions. A homeowner quote should identify how existing building/control joints and perimeter movement will be handled rather than promising a completely seamless rigid field.
