Tile is the visible finish, but a durable tile installation is an assembly. The slab or subfloor, cracks and movement, waterproofing where needed, setting mortar, movement joints, grout, sealers and transitions all affect whether the finished surface stays bonded and dry.
Start With the Layer Under the Tile
A good-looking tile sample tells you almost nothing about the condition of the substrate. Concrete can crack or move. Existing coatings can act as bond breakers. Shower tile can look perfect while the waterproofing behind it is defective. Grout can be sealed and still not turn a shower into a waterproof assembly.

The Surface Blueprint Rule
Do not buy a tile job by square-foot price alone. Ask what the installer found underneath, how movement and moisture will be handled, what setting system is specified, and which joints are intended to remain flexible. If the project changes a shower pan, plumbing, electrical work or another regulated assembly, licensing and permitting can also change even though ordinary tile installation itself is generally treated differently in Florida.
