High Florida humidity does not automatically make exterior painting impossible, but it can lengthen drying and shrink the safe weather window. Air temperature is only one number: surface temperature, relative humidity, dew formation, rain timing and the coating’s own data sheet all matter.
Humidity Changes Drying
Waterborne exterior coatings need water to leave the film as it cures. High relative humidity slows that process. Behr explicitly notes that higher humidity can increase dry time and rain-resistance time. Benjamin Moore likewise advises avoiding excessive humidity and using the product-specific technical data sheet for temperature limits.
Dew Is a Different Problem
A surface can reach the dew point even when there is no rain. Sherwin-Williams warns that dew on uncured exterior paint can cause surface staining and adhesion problems. In Florida, early-morning and evening work can therefore be risky even when the daytime forecast looks favorable.
Surface Temperature Can Be Far From Air Temperature
Direct sun can heat a dark wall well above the reported air temperature. Sherwin-Williams notes that very high temperatures can make a film dry before it has properly adhered, while Benjamin Moore warns that excessive heat can impair flow and leveling and contribute to coating defects. Follow the coating’s stated air-and-surface range rather than relying on the weather app alone.
Florida Scheduling Rule
The best window is often after morning moisture has evaporated but before the wall becomes excessively hot and before afternoon storms or evening dew threaten the uncured coating. That window changes by season, orientation, shade and product.
